We’re not seeing massive savings in Georgia gas prices. However, things are moving in the right direction. We have a surplus of storage heading into fall shoulder months. That may help cut plan prices. Unfortunately, we also have heat domes settling in over Georgia this month. That’s most likely going to push rates up temporarily with high demand for natural gas for electricity for AC. So, this month were recommending something a bit unusual. If scorching August heat domes hike GA gas prices, hold out until September with a variable rate plan.

Variable Rate Plans for Best GA Gas Prices

These variable rate plans offer cheap intro rates to get through the heat of August and into fall.

Firstly, we have the Gas South Intro Variable plan at $0.290 per therm. This rate lasts for just one month then jumps up to the provider’s standard variable rate, which is $1.99 per therm, according to the GA PSC. The monthly charge is $6.95-$9.95.

Next is the Georgia Natural Gas® Market Intro at $0.399 per therm. However, this rate goes 2 months. After that it rolls up to the standard variable rate, currently $2.329 per therm. Plus there is no monthly charge and you get Greener Life® free for 12 months which comes with a 5 cent per therm discount.

Lastly, there’s the Scana Energy Introductory Variable Rate at $0.399 per therm. You only get this rate for one month before you jump up to the provider’s standard variable rate, currently $1.999. The monthly charge is $5.95. As a bonus you get $5 discount per month for 20 months.

Comparing Costs for Variable Rate Plans

The average residential user only consumes about 23 therms of natural gas in August and September. So, the difference in cost between these gas plans isn’t going to be massive. For one month of late summer natural gas use (therms only), you might pay about:

$6.67 for Gas South

$8.27 for Georgia Natural Gas®

And $4.17 (with $5 credit) for Scana Energy

So, at the most you would be saving around $4 with the cheapest plan. But, Georgia Natural Gas® gives you the option to stretch things out to October AND you don’t pay the monthly charge! You pay a low price per therm with no commitment and can take your time to find a cheap long term plan.

So, that’s exactly where I would put my money for an intro variable rate plan this month.
