For many customers, this could mean an opportunity to save money.\u00a0To do this, customers may need to decide whether to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiagassavings.com\/resources\/how-to-switch-your-georgia-natural-gas-provider\">switch to a new natural gas provider<\/a>. The confusing part to this is getting the timing right. You could end up paying more for your natural gas instead. However, we&#8217;ll guide you through what&#8217;s happening to with natural gas pricing so you can get the best deal on rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is Shoulder Month Natural Gas Pricing?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twice a year, demand for natural gas decreases. These \u201cshoulder months\u201d occur around the start of October, and again May. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiagassavings.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/11\/times-buy-georgia-natural-gas-plans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural gas prices tend to drop during shoulder months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, before picking up again in summer and winter. That means it\u2019s often a good idea to shop fixed-rate plans during those months when natural gas rates are cheap.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will Natural Gas Prices Go Up Soon?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The price of natural gas fluctuates during winter, often spiking in response to particularly cold weather. This isn\u2019t a cast-iron rule; last year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/eye-of-the-storm\/february-2020-earths-2nd-warmest-february-and-3rd-warmest-month-on-record\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relatively mild winter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, combined with a large supply of natural gas in storage, meant that prices didn\u2019t increase as much as they were expected to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the price of natural gas in 2020 is very likely to increase in the next few months. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) released it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short Term Energy Outlook (STEO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in August. This predicted that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the sharpest increases will be during this fall and winter when they rise from an average of $2.11\/MMBtu in September to $3.14\/MMBtu in February.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are wholesale natural gas prices, but this is likely to have an impact on consumer natural gas prices as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Reduced Impact On Natural Gas?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural gas prices are predicted to increase by this winter. The combination of record low prices for natural gas and coronavirus has prompted natural gas producers to cut their output. However, in the short term, the EIA is actually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/naturalgas\/weekly\/archivenew_ngwu\/2020\/09_03\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expecting prices to remain steady or even decrease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Hurricane Laura has also reduced the demand for natural gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is still\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ir.eia.gov\/ngs\/ngs.html#:~:text=Working%20gas%20in%20storage%20was,year%20average%20of%203%2C048%20Bcf.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot of natural gas in storage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too, so it\u2019s unlikely that there will be much scarcity when colder weather hits. Despite the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) predicting a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/our-mandate\/climate\/el-ni%C3%B1ola-ni%C3%B1a-update#:~:text=Given%20current%20conditions%20and%20model,%2DFebruary%202020%2F2021%20period.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% chance of La Ni\u00f1a<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year, which typically brings colder winters in North America, recent La Ni\u00f1a\u2019s have been relatively mild. Though consumers will use a lot of natural gas this winter, there&#8217;s the <em>potential<\/em> that stocks might not be as depleted by May as in past years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding A Cheap Natural Gas Plan<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to appreciate that natural gas prices are still\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cheap right now.
